To the tune of “Battle Hymn of the Republic”

I’m going now to pick up my first and only son.
It seemed that he had barely turned a handsome twenty-one
Before he learned the ballot’s less important than a gun,
And now he’s coming home.

CHORUS

Raise your glasses to our sons now,
Let’s salute them with our guns now,
Our mission overseas is done now,
Our president says so!

None of us knew too much about this land they call Iraq,
We’d watch the war each night with other parents on our block
And count the days and hours on the calendar and clock,
Until they all came home.

CHORUS

Raise your glasses to our sons now,
Let’s salute them with our guns now,
Our mission overseas is done now,
Our president says so!

Our son was fond of writing us a letter every week,
We know the words will all be right when it’s our time to speak,
But silence will be golden when we get to kiss his cheek,
For God has brought him home!

CHORUS

Raise your glasses to our sons now,
Let’s salute them with our guns now,
Our mission overseas is done now,
Our president says so!

My son! My son! We kept our word; we told you we’d be here
Forgive us if I wipe my eyes and Mother sheds a tear,
With kids like you, America has nothing left to fear,
Our president says so!

CHORUS

Raise your glasses to our sons now,
Let’s salute them with our guns now,
Our mission overseas is done now,
Our president says so!

[Slowly]

Now soon we’ll get to touch your hands and kiss your sunburned brow,
You brought such honor to the flag that drapes your coffin now,
Each May they’ll place a wreath and we will all remember how
The top of you came home!

[Emphatically but slowly] CHORUS

Raise your glasses to our sons now,
Let’s salute them with our guns now,
Our mission overseas is done now,
Our president says so!

My son, our song of gratitude will not remain unsung;
God doesn’t call it torture when the dead don’t speak our tongue!
He’ll bless the bombs and bullets where the stars and stripes are hung,
So the rich boys can stay home!

Raise your glasses to our sons now,
They won’t need our prayers and guns now,
Our leader says the war is done now,
But I wonder how he’d know –

For to him it’s just a show –

And HE never had to go!

Whoever "Joe Dan" is --

My name is Michelle - not Mike. Do people call you Jo Ann? I don't think you'd like it if they did.

Seem like some else likes the melody of "the Battle Hymn of the Republic"

The Battle Hymn of the Republic, Updated was written in 1901.
It is written in the same tune and cadence as the original Battle Hymn of the Republic.

JoAnn

Lyrics
Mine eyes have seen the orgy of the launching of the Sword;
He is searching out the hoardings where the stranger's wealth is stored;
He hath loosed his fateful lightnings, and with woe and death has scored;
His lust is marching on.

I have seen him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps;
They have builded him an altar in the Eastern dews and damps;
I have read his doomful mission by the dim and flaring lamps—
His night is marching on.

I have read his bandit gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
"As ye deal with my pretensions, so with you my wrath shall deal;
Let the faithless son of Freedom crush the patriot with his heel;
Lo, Greed is marching on!"

We have legalized the strumpet and are guarding her retreat;*
Greed is seeking out commercial souls before his judgement seat;
O, be swift, ye clods, to answer him! be jubilant my feet!
Our god is marching on!

In a sordid slime harmonious Greed was born in yonder ditch,
With a longing in his bosom—and for others' goods an itch.
As Christ died to make men holy, let men die to make us rich—
Our god is marching on.
